Dr. Halsey was born and raised in Marion, VA.  He graduated from Marion Senior High School in 1998 and then moved to Blacksburg, VA to become a Hokie, following in his parents footsteps.  At Virginia Tech, Dr. Halsey developed an interest in veterinary medicine and set his sights on entering veterinary school.  He graduated from Virginia Tech in 2002 with a B.S. in biology magna cum laude.

Dr. Halsey entered veterinary school in 2002 at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, along with 89 classmates including Dr. Gunter.  Tracking in the small animal curriculum, he knew that caring for companion animals would be his career focus.  During veterinary school, he completed externships in emergency, shelter medicine, private practice, and all departments within the veterinary teaching hospital.  Dr. Halsey graduated from VMRCVM in 2006 and is a member of Phi Zeta, the national veterinary honor society.  He is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Veterinary Information Network, Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, and Appalachian Veterinary Medical Association of Southwestern Virginia (Current VVMA Delegate).

Dr. Halsey intends to be a lifelong student of veterinary medicine, offering the best and most comprehensive care for our furry family members.  He has a special interest in orthopedic surgery and disease, ophthalmology, and ultrasonography.

After practicing at Smyth County Animal Hospital and two practices in Lynchburg, VA, Dr. Halsey returned to Smyth County in 2008 and took over SCAH.  His best friend and wife, Autumn, is his business partner and a licensed “nurse” for animals.  They have three children, Mason, McKinley, and Moxley, along with six dogs, seven cats, nine horses, and a few chickens.  He enjoys traveling, riding motorcycles, and showing cutting horses.
